Hakata Gensuke Healeys Lane store will bring much loved classic Tonkotsu ramen flavours like original, black sesame and garlic, Godfire and shoyu, and side dishes such as chicken karaage and gyoza, this newest establishment will also run a Kushiage and Onigiri pop up, with menu created by Satoshi Yamanaka, Executive Chef of Hakata Gensuke, and Kei Ishiura, Hakata Gensuke’s Head Chef and a Fukuoka native. “Being very portable and easy to eat, Kushiage and Onigiri can be found all over food stalls in Fukuoka,” says Satoshi Yamanaka. Kushiage, bite-sized chunks of deep-fried panko crumbed meats, vegetables or seafood, eaten with a special sweet and sour sauce, are delightful and make a perfect accompaniment to a round of drinks with friends.

The other branches have queues but not this place. I came on Friday 6pm and the place was partially packed. The seating is very squished, almost like you’re in Japan. There were four tables outside so might have been a better option but it was too cold for me.

We have been to several of the Hakata Gensuke branches and this is by far the worst one.

The service was good, they came and helped due to online issues. The ramen was okay, I wished the pork and egg had some flavour. The soup and noodles were amazing especially since they gave us a choice of what type of noodles we wanted. The side dish was pretty nice as well. Restroom we will have to walk 3 to 4 mins.

I dropped into Hakata Gensuke looking for a quick bowl of lunchtime ramen. I ordered the speciality tonkotsu for takeaway and was pretty disappointed with the serving size. The bowl was half empty and only came with a single piece of thinly sliced pork. Thankfully the both the pork and soup broth were delicious but it did feel like I was getting ripped off for $18 per bowl.

Hidden away on Healeys Lane, and a few other locations around town, Hakata Gensuke offer the perfect hot bowl of hearty ramen on a cold winter day.

The tonkotsu ramen was delicious, but the value is quite poor unfortunately. There should be more than one piece of cha-shu for the price, and $2.5 for an egg is a laugh.

The bowl of ramen was very nice. Only issue I had was the portions were in the small side for the price. One piece of pork is on the frugal side in my opinion

Delicious Ramen and very friendly staff. One of my friends left behind her bag at the restaurant and the lovely waitress returned it to us after we had walked away. Will definitely be back next time I need a quick, cheap and filling meal.

A deservedly popular Tonkotsu Ramen joint.
