Ippodu is a trendy-looking place to grab a bowl of ramen, with a modern but decidedly Asian-inspired aesthetic that creates a comfortable warmth. Electronic music plays at just the right volume to lend the atmosphere a hint of energy without being too loud to make conversation difficult. The ramen itself is a bit on the expensive side and was honestly somewhat disappointing considering the price. I ordered a deluxe bowl but the $9 more that I paid only got me two extra slices of pork and an additional egg. The noodles were good but the tonkatsu soup base didn’t deliver the flavour hit that I usually look for in a bowl of ramen. Lastly, it was very tedious to place our order using the QR code on the table. Whatever happened to a real person taking a customer’s order?

Good ramen and some GREAT other options, including – unexpectedly from a ramen restaurant – one of the best salmon rolls I’ve ever had. The online ordering system works well and the staff were friendly. The décor is quite nice too, although it’s a little cramped with not much space between tables. There was no queue at 1pm on a Saturday in June but I think we may have got the last available table.

I gave it a try as a friend really thinks highly of this Franchise. Personally i think it’s one of a good ramen places in Melbourne for the broth, but not much of the better quality that I was expecting for the reputation it has.
