Was here yesterday to try the XOPP having read about it on Time Out. I can’t find fault in their food, the ingredient quality is good and cooked well for Chinese standard. But what tainted my overall experience was at the end of my meal when I was hustled to leave a tip, my wife was quick to point out that there are minimum wages and service charge in Australia which should mitigate the need for tipping. However the waiter insisted there is no service charge included for our meal. Under pressure, I gave in and included 10% tip.

With the disappearance of the original Golden Century on Sussex St, this has now been my go to when craving pippies and salt and pepper calamari. Prices are much higher than your regular Chinese restaurant, but I think it’s well worth the extra, plus the service here isn’t as surly as in the average Chinatown restaurant too. But it’s all about the food. Perfectly crispy exterior on the calamari, not doughy like many other places do, and nicely tender calamari on the inside. And we always have to have their pippies in XO sauce because it is top notch.

A good restaurant serves seafood and traditional Hong Kong food. What I like the best is the XOPP, which is the most popular seafood dish in this restaurant. Also I recommend the shrimp dumplings and mushroom dumplings, beef ball and sticky rice chicken. They also give you some chili garlic sauce which is quite good. Recommend to more than 3 persons’ group.

Edit: 3 star 21/1/23 – Went for dinner, pre-booked ages ago. The service was as expected pre-LNY, the food was suboptimal, pippies we sent back twice as it was off and too sandy. The vegetarian was really bad…
