Visited Taste Hunan Restaurant a while ago when they first relocated here. It’s a great spot for group dining, whether with family or friends. The ambience sets the mood for shared moments, and while the menu boasts a variety of dishes, the pickle fish is a standout recommendation.

The dishes here are robust and full of flavour, especially nice to accompany white steamed rice. Food can be spicy so make sure you check with the service staff.

We have dined at this restaurant a few times, enjoying their delicious Hunan dishes. However, it’s worth noting that you might need to wait for 45 minutes or more to receive your first dish, which can be quite lengthy if you’re hungry.

I have a preference for Hunan cuisine and I must say that this restaurant is one of the best places to go for authentic Hunan dishes in Melbourne. I have been to this restaurant several times with my friends, but they have recently moved to a new location. While the staff is okay, I wouldn’t expect top-notch service, but that’s fine. The environment is decent, and the dishes are definitely tasty, but be prepared to pay a bit more as they are not cheap.

Good solid dishes. Loved the bamboo smoked pork and the pork ribs. The chickpeas and garlic shoot in the pork ribs dish were bomb.

Food is delicious. It is still evident that most of the diners here are Chinese so it just shows that many non-Chinese are not aware of what Hunan cuisine is. For those who haven’t tried Hunan cuisine yet, they should give it a go. This restaurant is quite compact but it isn’t super small either. So it’s nice and cosy inside. The one complaint while we dined here was that we ordered 3 dishes and one came out almost within 5 minutes. The remaining 2 dishes took at least 40-50 minutes to arrive. We understand kitchen mishaps and the chaotic nature of it, but it was too long for any customer. I would have given 5 stars if not for this. But I would still come back. So hopefully this isn’t repeated again next time.

Best Hunan restaurant in Melbourne for sure!!! As a Hunanese, spending years to find the flavour tastes like home, this is my go to place if I ever craving for some spicy food.

Got the Hunan pork slices with chilli and red oil beef slices (cold meat). Food is very spicy & good, portion sizes are very generous although the individual dishes themselves are quite expensive. Service/wait time for food is a little long.

Chinese restaurant done out in a Chairman Mao theme. His youthful face is on all the plates and everywhere. Dishes are spicy, but toned down compared with those in China Hunan. We tried 13 dishes and that was certainly a lot if food. Took home more than enough for another meal. I really liked the fish head dish. It had two sides – red and green. Very tasty. The sliced green beans and the spinach with garlic were also special.

Authentic Hunan dishes, come for hot (not to be confused with spicy), burn the next day kinda hot, food. Good value, large servings.
