Limited meal time. They expect customer on time but they were not. I felt they were not prepare for the day. One, they were late to invite us in. We were standing in the cold waiting for time. Second, chef have to ran out to get fish. Nothing memorable on the food except for the hot soup. There was a minimum spent of $50 per person. We gave up ordering anything else and just went with the min. Spent set menu. We left with unsatisfied tummy and went somewhere for better and valued food.

Kappo by Kuon has now been repurposed as a ‘walk-in’ sushi counter. If you want that feeling of being in Japan, then this place is a must visit. Even though they have the walk-in option, I still recommend booking. I waited for an hour for a seat.

Sushi, by the piece. All the better fish and cuts you don’t normally get in Sydney and without committing to a long omakase. It’s refreshing to buck the omakase trend and just do sushi in a style you might find in Japan or elsewhere and just choose what you want. There are still set menus if you don’t want to pick. But getting pieces like engawa, nodoguro, and natto gunkan, shime saba… why wouldn’t you? There’s some hot cooked food as well if that’s your thing. Afternoon tends to be less busy than evenings, though patronage from the public is quite random.

Price point was cheap given the quality of the cuts of sashimi. Ranked a little lower on the atmosphere side as the seating was limited to 60 minutes which felt a bit rushed. Tastiest scallops, engawa (which I’ve never had before), mackerel and other amazing cuts. $70 for the 12 sushi omakase and you can add additional a la carte (highly recommend the chawanmushi). We splurged for some Hokkaido Uni and it was well worth the price for melt in your mouth absolute deliciousness

Being an up-scale japanese restaurant, service here isn’t great. Booking was made at 12pm which is when they open however they opened late. They require cancellations <48hrs to be paid but they themselves aren't on-time. Not what you would expect for a place of this stature.

This review does not in any way reflect the food or quality of the food. It’s all about service & atmosphere. The restaurant apparently welcomes walk-in, this is the reason for the rating. On the night I visited, the restaurant was clearly fully booked, yet sign welcoming walk-in was out, and a sign indicated next walk-in session was available at 8pm. Put my name down and choose to wait outside, during the 30 min wait there was no acknowledgement from foh staff, no indication that the restaurant was running behind schedule, it was not until customer with reservation turned up and had to wait 30 min. When I asked, I was told there could be another 20 min wait, which would be 8.40 pm. So the point is if you want to eat here, trying booking.
