A great dining experience. The only reason it goes down one star is the price range. For what you are actually getting, this seems like it’s asking a bit much. Hear me though, it was delicious and we will probably be back. Just know it pretty $$$. But for location and being Japanese, this is to be expected.

our dinner last night was lovely and we couldn’t help but order another round of the prawn sunda (it was divine and I can’t wait to be back for more). Delicious, fresh, beautifully served dishes. 10/10

I’m just going to get to the point. After a trying task of finding a park in a very small and limited area, we finally got inside to a minimal, modern, hip looking restaurant (it’s small, so definitely, definitely book). We sat down and ordered drinks. However, it wasn’t made clear to us that the menus were under the placemats, so it took a while to start to even choose what to get. When we did eventually order – with the help from our phone torches as it’s so dark in there – we’d placed our orders before the tables on either side of us (which are so painfully close to each other, we could literally smell the garlic coming out of the pores of the guy next to us on one side), yet our food came out last. The service was shockingly slow, and main meals were brought out for entree time, and vice versa.

Easily some of the best food I’ve had in Melbourne. Just delicious, every single dish we tried worked perfectly and was presented beautifully. The wine list really accompanied the food well too, and was excellent on its own merits. The inside of Sonny Chiba is delightful to dine in, the soft lighting and light woods really give it a charming relaxed attitude. Which is matched by the staff who were friendly and helpful above and beyond. Cannot recommend this restaurant more highly, will definitely go back to try the rest of the menu!

We had the most amazing experience at Sonny Chiba on our date night. Jace was exceptional and went above and beyond in customer service. Our food, was fresh, clean and exquisitely balanced. The dining room is warm and inviting and aesthetically pleasing. We loved our dinner here and have already recommended it to all our friends. We’ll be back soon.

Fantastic restaurant and phenomenal food. The FOH was prompt and catered to our every need with the food being brought out quickly. The king fish, beef fried rice and miso eggplant were our favorite dishes and full of flavor – compliments to the chef. Highly recommend for both intimate and group dinners. Overall, we had a lovely evening here and will be back.

Seriously don’t bother with this place, the food is okay but the staff ruin the entire experience. For what its worth, I have never written a negative review for a business before, but when its an attitude problem (that is consistent across many reviews) it feels like the right thing to do. Never have I been made to feel so belittled by staff (like they were doing us some large honor by having us eat there). Service was incredibly slow (an hour between courses), waiters un-attentive – everything seemed difficult for them…both the manager and front of house. Its just not worth giving hard earned money to a place like this, when there are so many fabulous spots to eat in the area and Melbourne generally.

Great small and cosy Japanese eatery. Food is so fresh and delicious. Intimate with only. 4 or 5 tables and some bench seating so book early if you want a table. We sat at the bench and could watch the food being prepared meticulously in front of us. Great night out.

The first time I visited Sonny Chiba, I knew I had to go back again and try the full menu. I love how they shake things up and offer new, exciting items on the menu when the season changes. The food was incredible and I was at a loss for words when we had the Beef Yakimeshi (wagyu fried rice). Great spot that feels local but still very lively especially this summer as they’ve opened up outdoor dining on Beatty Avenue. Don’t forget to try the Orion beer from Okinawa, it’s incredibly smooth!

Food was good. The cod, tuna and dessert were probably main highlights. Ambience was very nice and warm.. but was no match for a cold Melbourne winter night. Got pretty uncomfortably cold upstairs!! Even with small fans at the feet. Originally seated downstairs right at opening of door! So anyone walks in! Baaaam hello Melbourne! Once closed the heater was enough. Dining upstairs? BYO heater and order cold dishes.
