This is my favourite spot during the winter. As a vegetarian you don’t have a lot of options, nonetheless the mushroom broth warms your heart. They have different add-ons from soy sauce to peanut sauce to garlic sauce to chilli-oil to spice up different combinations but nothing beats the taste of raw broth.

Sichuan style soup place. For the uninitiated this is how it works: you grab a bowl and tongs and put as much of the available veges meats and other items from the fridges as you would like in it. You pay by weight, and then the chef cooks your chosen items in their spicy soup. Very tasty, massive servings.

They had a vegan option broth which is great and lovely. You can choose what ever you like to be put in your hotpot and then weight it down. They will cook it with your choosen broth. Usually very crowded though.

Malatang franchise than has opened in Canberra. For those who don’t know what I’m taking about it’s a pick ‘n’ mix type thing where all your ingredients are cooked in a slightly spicy Sichuan broth. Range of ingredients is good. They even had pigs kidneys when I was there (although I wish it was liver instead). Would be great if they had a wider range of sauce / condiments though, like the newer Sydney branch.

Editing and changing to 5 stars now, we came for lunch and it was delicious again! First time visiting this place and first time trying malatang. I can say a really liked it, fresh veggies, mushrooms and tofu were nice with the mushroom broth. Added a little of chilli oil to make it even better. Staff was friendly and helpful as we had questions about what was vegan. Great service, will definitely come back.

Malatang is finally in Canberra! You get to choose your own type and quantity of meat/veggies/noodles in a DIY fashion. Once your bowl is filled, you drop it off at the counter with a choice of soup base. When I went there were signs for a mushroom broth or tomato broth but they also offer a sesame based spicy broth which is delicious. Once your order is ready you’ll have another choice of toppings/sauces by the counter. A great casual meal.
