About David’s Master Pot: The Streetfood Mala Tang hotpot
Our Authentic Sichuan Food (Chengdu traditional food)
At David’s Master Pot, we use the methods passed down in Sichuan, where it originated. The Malatang idea was formed from the hard workers on the Yangtze River in Sichuan. We stir fry over 20 different kinds of Chinese herbs and spices (including the prickly ash Sichuan pepper) before adding our pork bone broth and our secret chilli oil mix before boiling it all together for 12 hours. This is how we create the most authentic Malatang soup base you know and love!
All our Master Pot Malatang stores are decked out with traditional interiors so we can bring a piece of home here to Melbourne.

Could not help myself stop eating it. It allows you to choose your ingredients and cost by the overall weight, which is quite controllable and fair. And the spice and the flavor just hit the spot. It will become my most impressive memory in Melbourne.

Unfortunately when asking for Szechuan level 4 spicy that must mean make it as salty as possible? My partners meal was lovely and the parts of my meal that were edible (whatever didn’t go in the sauce down bottom) was cooked well. Definitely not much burn to it despite it being the hottest they offer, won’t be back but hopefully it was just an accident making a meal that salty.

Picked out roughly 500g+ of ingredients which comes up to about $23. There are 4 levels of spiciness, I picked level 2 and it was just right — at a level of spice that was enjoyable. In general, vegetables & tofu tend to be of less value compared to meat as this is a pay by weight restaurant. Ingredients looked fresh and are frequently refilled by staff. *Note that there is a minimum of 400g per order and min. of 800g to pick the spicy stir fry option. I paid 50 cents for a takeaway box as it was way too much food for me.

The soup was full of flavour. Rice is free. Veggies and meat were fresh. A busy restaurant. Highly recommended.

Mid afternoon stroll through Victoria Market a few of my buddies got hungry and walked in David’s Master pot. Didn’t know what to expect as I’ve never had Malatang before. I should’ve googled Malatang. As i stood in line waiting for a table i quickly realize this is a form of Chinese hot pot where you pick your own ingredients and instead of cooking yourself it is assembled to your choices of soup broth and served in a big bowl.

Back again at my favourite malatang – pick ‘n mix express hotpot for one where we filled our pots with a range of appetising meat, seafood, beancurd, veggies and special noodles from the open refrigerator.
