Mabu Mabu - Big Esso 3000

Social Profile:

Big Esso is an Indigenous owned and operated bar and kitchen, located on the land of the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung peoples. ‘Big Esso’ means ‘the biggest thank you.’ It is an acknowledgement we make full-heartedly and in recognition of our Elders and community who have kept our culture alive, including our chef’s cultural heritage: the Komet Tribe of the Meriam People of Mer Island in the Torres Strait. Big Esso is a place to meet friends and strangers. Grab a seat at our communal tables and discover an incredible range of Indigenous flavours. We are working towards a sustainable and socially driven supply chain. Where possible, we source from First Nations, womxn-led, and environmentally conscious producers who align with our ethos.

We loved everything here! The popcorn crocodile meat, kangaroo tail, the fish, sauté morning glory and the lamb shank. Every dish had their unique flavour. The crew were friendly and bubbly and their recommendations were totally what we were looking for They also accommodated our requests for the occasion and we absolutely appreciated that. ❤️ Thank you so much, such a delightful evening spent here. Will definitely come again for the emu steak

I was so excited to visit Mabu Mabu. A Torres Straight owned and run business. I asked a staff member for a take away menu at the entrance.

I’ve tried Emu a couple of times and it was never done right. But I’m a man of perseverance; when I saw emu on the menu, I had to stop by.

Definitely a must try if you want to find out more about Indigenous flavours. An interesting fusion of new and traditional, and it all comes together beautifully. Wonderfully cooked and all the dishes boast amazing flavours. The seasonal menu means that you’re always in for something different when you visit.

Really good homage to Australian bush ingredients here. Menu items rotate per season and always include some variation of emu, kangaroo, and crocodile.

We came to Mabu Mabu wanting to try local Australian ingredients, and we got just that! The menu is seasonal, so dishes come on and off as they are available. When we booked the reservation, they had green ant curry on the menu, but it wasn’t on the menu any more when we visited, but the staff gave us a taste of the ants in a tiny dish, so we still got to see what they were like! Our favorite dishes were the Fried Crocodile and the Emu Filet.

I love what they’re doing at Mabu Mabu (and specifically Big Esso, which is the bar and kitchen), in bringing Indigenous food back to the banks of the river. It’s a prime but chilled location in Fed Square, and the big outdoor tables are fantastic on a fine day. The food is great – I don’t think there are many places that serve native food this well. The emu in particular was so good, and even the native fruit cordial was special. The service was also spot on. The only issue is that the price doesn’t encourage regular visits, otherwise we’d be here all the time! I’ve also really enjoyed Mabu Mabu’s catering at a couple of business events.

I would say once is enough. This might be suitable for tourists who haven’t tried indigenous food such as emu, crocodile meat, etc. & and are only staying in the CBD area. They are quite pricey, but the food weren’t that flavourful.

From other reviews I was expecting a little more. More flavours, admittedly the dishes were clean/fresh but flavour wise they just lacked a little…flavour. The dishes were beautifully presented and the staff super friendly and very prompt. The venue it’s self is buzzing and filled with bright colours everywhere you look.

After encouraging my friend to give this a try on our recent visit to Melbourne it was worth the effort to convince her.
