It’s cold, blowing a gale and pouring with rain. What better excuse do you need for a feed of fish and chips? From East Beach Fish and Chips at 146 Griffiths St, Port Fairy I received a no frills customer service experience when I placed my order for the usual fare at the fish and chip shop. The order didn’t take long to cook and I was away in no time. The chips I have to say were excellent, crispy on the outside soft in the middle. The ones you keep going back for even though you have had your fill. If I were to guess, I’d say they were ‘home made.’ The Flake on the other hand, when I cut into it seemed grey in colour. Although not altogether unpleasant, the potato cake and fish had different taste to them and were a little over done for my liking. I would certainly order the chips again.

There’s cheap places so expectations will be low. In this case, prices were not especially cheap but the environment was. Oilly floor, almost slipped. chips were not well seasoned and stale. The grilled barramundi appeared more pan fried than grilled. Also appeared to “shrank” some how because it looked bigger in the display fridge. Potato scallop were too thickly battered, hence soggy and under seasoned. Worst quality crab stick that I’ve had in my life. Wasn’t fried very well either.

Quick, fresh, and well cooked flake, still moist flesh, batter cooked through. Potato cakes cooked to perfection. Then, a short drive to East Beach to enjoy the views overlooking the bay towards Griffiths Island and the magnificent Ocean and lighthouse.

We’ve eaten from here before and it was amazing, so we thought we’d try it again. Our meal cost us $44, we got a lamb souva, piece of fish, 3 steamed dim sims, 2 potato cakes, 2 scallops and $7 worth of chips.

Burger with the lot was good so that was worth the visit. Chips were just okay, slightly soft even though it had just been cooked and fish was reasonable in taste. Potato cakes were very small and crusty. Overall just okay and good enough but not the best. Having said all that not much better in Port Fairy for a basic fish and chip restaurant. Only 3 benches are available on the side of the restaurant outside. Alternatively it’s just a small walk to the beach.

Got flakes and chips. Wasn’t much chips for what I ordered. Chips were ok had better. The flakes were over cooked and thin. Actually feel sick from eating the food. Won’t go back.
